Our feet carry the loads of our lives, but what happens when they can’t keep up? Today we’re talking Metatarsal Bones, those in charge of causing Metatersalgia (See Red Highlight in Image Below). Read on to find out all the details of this condition, including causes, symptoms, and treatment!

Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia (met-uh-tahr-SAL-juh) occurs on the balls of the feet, and is characterized by pain, inflammation or stinging in the region – usually in a concentrated area. The most common causes are shoes that fit poorly, frequent running and jumping, or foot deformities.

The most common symptoms include:

Sharp, aching or burning pain in the ball of your foot — the part of the sole just behind your toes

Pain that worsens when you stand, run, flex your feet or walk — especially barefoot on a hard surface — and improves when you rest

Sharp or shooting pain, numbness, or tingling in your toes

A feeling of having a pebble in your shoe

(via Mayo Clinic)

Metatarsalgia is not a serious condition, but can make life a little more painful. To the benefit of most people, at-home treatments including ice and rest can relieve a lot of symptoms. Making sure you have shoes that fit correctly, with support in all the right areas can also be a great benefit to Metatarsalgia sufferers. Another great solution is Metatarsal Pads, which can help absorb shock and cushion the balls of your feet.
